La distribution des tuiles estampillées de la VIIIe légion Augusta autour de Mirebeau-sur-Bèze (Côte-d'Or, France)

2011

The 8th Augustan Legion was installed at Mirebeau-sur-Bèze (Côte-d'Or) after 70 AD following the troubles that arose with the Lingons. It remained there until the time of Domitian, a period of roughly twenty years, during which time the soldiers produced tiles stamped with the name of the legion. Analysis of the dispersion of the tiles in the region around Mirebeau shows that they followed the communication routes. Consideration of the contexts in which these tiles were used, their number on each site and the resources necessary to manufacture them reveals that the 8th Legion may have played a significant role in the diffusion and adoption of tiled roofs, a construction technique that was t…

DO TRANSPORT COSTS HAVE A DIFFERENTIAL EFFECT ON TRADE AT THE SECTORAL LEVEL?

2008

This article aims to analyse the determinants of transport costs and to investigate their influence in international trade with a sample of disaggregate trade data. First, we estimate a transport-cost function using cross-section data on maritime and overland transport for four sectors: agro-industry, ceramic tiles, motor vehicle parts and accessories, and electrical and mechanical household appliances, obtained from interviews held with Spanish exporters and logistics operators in 2001. Second, we study the relationship between transport costs and trade and estimate the elasticity of trade with respect to transport costs for each sector. Important differences for high value- and low value-…

Sensitivity analysis to quantify uncertainty in Life Cycle Assessment: The case study of an Italian tile

2011

Abstract The results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study can be affected by several uncertainty sources, mainly due to the methodological choices, the initial assumptions, i.e. allocation rules, system boundaries and impact assessment methods, and the quality of the available data. Then, the experts should estimate the extent of the above-mentioned sources of uncertainty for improving the reliability and the representativeness of the obtained eco-profiles. To estimate the uncertainty is necessary to obtain reliable, transparent and representative LCA results and to correctly support decision-makers in the selection of different product or process options. The following paper starts from …

eISP: a Programmable Processing Architecture for Smart Phone Image Enhancement

2009

4 pages; Today's smart phones, with their embedded high-resolution video sensors, require computing capacities that are too high to easily meet stringent silicon area and power consumption requirements (some one and a half square millimeters and half a watt) especially when programmable components are used. To develop such capacities, integrators still rely on dedicated low resolution video processing components, whose drawback is low flexibility. With this in mind, our paper presents eISP {--} a new, fully programmable Embedded Image Signal Processor architecture, now validated in {TSMC 65nm} technology to achieve a capacity of {16.8 GOPs} at {233 MHz}, for {1.5 mm$^2$} of silicon area and…

From βαλανεῖα to thermae: unveiling the transition from Greek to Roman architectural models of baths by technological and provenance archaeometric st…

2019

So far unexplored, the introduction and the spread of the Roman thermal buildings in the prima provincia (Sicily) are widely debated in the current archeological studies. Mainly due to the lack of systematic excavations and intensively technological studies, the assessment of thermae in the Hellenistic-Roman Sicily has been thus far interpreted as a new social and architectural experience. However, a more careful archeological investigation would suggest a gradual transformation of the architectural landscape from the purely Greek bath tradition to the canonical thermae types. The aim of this paper is therefore to study the classical hot bath culture and, in particular, the transition from …

Price discrimination and market power in export markets: The case of the ceramic tile industry.

2005

This paper combines the pricing-to-market equation and the residual demand elasticity equation to measure the extent of competition in the export markets of ceramic tiles, which has been dominated by Italian and Spanish producers since the late eighties. The findings show that the tile exporters enjoyed substantial market power over the period 1988-1998, and limited evidence that the export market has become more competitive over time.

Regression quantiles to assess higher education performance

2012

From 2001 Italian university system has adopted the credits to mea- sure the workload of the students. The weighted mean of marks with credits as weights is used to measure the their performance. In our opinion it does not seem a proper way to measure. We suggest to adopt the median of the weighted marks, because we are considering an ordinale variable, with a non-normal empir- ical distribution, and a®ected by outliers. Then, instead of using an OLS multiple regression, we investigate the determinants of the performance measured by the median using a regression quantile for ordinal response. A real dataset concerning 133 students of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Palermo is …

The green factor in European manufacturing: a case study of the Spanish ceramic tile industry

2014

This paper analyses how environmental issues have affected and are continuing to affect the evolution of European manufacturing industries based on the example of the Spanish Ceramic Tile Industry (SCTI).1 The Ceramic Tile Industry (CTI)2 in Europe became very competitive and innovative in the early 1990s, with the Italian and the Spanish sectors, which are cluster-based, becoming world leaders. However, since 2008, this leadership position is being eroded. We provide an in depth analysis of the SCTI focusing on the influence of new European environmental regulations. The CTI has a major impact on the environment and has been the focus of environmental regulations. We also consider the inno…

Interventi su volte sottili di mattoni in foglio in Sicilia (Intervention on tiled vaults in Sicily)

2016
